Join the Board of Directors

We are looking to fill several positions on our 15 member board of directors. This is a national organization and board members are located across the United States. The organization is well-established with a 40+ year track record of success helping families in rural poverty here in the United States. We have matching programs that provide friendship and material aid, but also have a strong focus on educational programs that can help increase self-sufficiency and break the cycle of poverty.

We are seeking candidates that are looking for an active governance role, and have made a positive impact in prior organizations by influencing change and growth through their involvement. Read more about the role of directors in Responsibilities Of Nonprofit Boards.

The following are targeted areas for recruitment to provide a diverse and well-rounded board. We anticipate each candidate will meet one (or more) of these areas of interest:

1) Finance/Accounting - We have both finance and audit committees that are seeking members. Accounting or audit committee experience is desired for these candidates.

2) Fund Development - We are seeking board members that can introduce us to potential donors, grant opportunities or provide exposure in other influential circles. We are also looking for individuals that have expertise in developing strategy for raising money--through appeals, member drives, corporate giving programs, grants, or other means.

3) Legal - We are seeking someone with awareness of legislation and state laws that pertain to nonprofits--optimally, this individual would also participate on our audit committee. Additionally, we would value someone with knowledge of or connections to general legal expertise in Florida (where we have offices and staff, and also the state where we are incorporated).

We expect that board members will become members of the organization and also make annual contributions according to their ability at a level that is meaningful to them. Board members are asked to commit to around 4 hours of committee meetings and work per month plus routine email communications. We currently have board meetings quarterly - 2 in-person (1 - 2 days), and 2 telephonic (1/2 day). We try to coordinate these meetings over weekends for greatest member convenience.

The Box Project carries Directors and Officers liability insurance along with the traditional industry insurances to cover its board of directors, staff and volunteers.

We are at an exciting time of growth and opportunity in our organization, and look forward to welcoming new members to assist us in our future success.

If joining the board of directors isn't the right fit, we also have other opportunities to get involved. The Box Project is always looking for individuals with special skills or businesses who can be called upon to give aid and advice for special projects. Such skills might include legal, business, educational, managerial, and literary skills. These volunteers are contacted when there is a need in their area of expertise. They work on various projects including areas of programming, funding, member services, education, technology, etc. To volunteer your services or explore our needs, please mail or email us telling us more about your area of interest or expertise.
